Fiji is ideally located in the warm tropics of the southern hemisphere. It lies on the 180 Meridian where the dawning of each new day occurs.
The two major islands in the group are known as Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Almost 80% of the population live on these two islands. Still the majority of the population live in the rural areas and the outer islands. Only about 40 percent of the population live in urban areas.
The two largest islands Viti Levu, being 10,385 sq km and Vanua Levu, being 5535 sq km makes up seven-eights of the total land area.
Vitu Levu has many towns and regions and offers much to attract visitors. The biggest town and the capital of Fiji is Suva situated on the southern end of the island. Lautoka, Nadi, Denarau, the Coral Coast, Pacific Harbour, Sigatoka, the Sunshine Coast and the eastern islands are areas you can easily discover as you make your way on the Queens Road, Viti Levu's main Highway. Sonaisali is situated off the Queens Road and just 15 minutes drive south of Nadi along sealed roads. West of Nadi lie the beautiful Mamanuca Islands, home to many holiday resorts and further north are the Yasawa Islands - magnificent and mostly untouched.
In the north, the main town Savu Savu sits alongside some of the most beautiful beaches in Fiji and beneath the mist covered mountains. The town is also famous for its hot springs. To the east of Vanua Levu is Taveuni, known as the Garden Island famous for its waterfalls and lakes.
