Fiji was first settled roughly 3500 years ago, when Melanesians and then Micronesians populated the islands north of Fiji before moving south. The first European to discover the islands was the Dutch explorer Able Tasman, who first sighted Fiji in 1643. More than 130 years later, in 1755, Captain James Cook came to Fiji. In 1789, Captain William Bligh sailed through the Fiji Islands after the infamous mutiny on the Bounty - no doubt in search of supplies. In 1970, Fiji gained independence from Britain and in 1987, it was declared a republic.
